Aren't these beautiful?

These are some of the cocoons our silkworms have spun. We have golden cocoons and white ones. It was fascinating to watch the process. It takes each silkworm quite a bit of time to find the right place to finally begin to spin. But eventually they wrap themselves, slowly and methodically, in cocoons of beautiful material and design.

While we wait for the caterpillars to change into moths inside the cocoons, we have a new batch of baby silkworms that hatched from their eggs last week. They are so tiny we need a magnifying glass to see them. But they are eating their tiny bits of mulberry leaves we pick for them.

The moths don't fly when they emerge from the cocoons. They don't eat either. All they do is mate and die within a few day. And, they leave behind their beautiful silk.
